Taliban flogged a man in Bamiyan province’s Yakawlang district on charges of “running away from home,” as public corporal punishments under their rule persist.
The Taliban-controlled Supreme Court did not specify whether the individual was a man or a woman but said in a statement that the person was lashed 39 times and sentenced to one year and six months in prison.
According to the statement, local Taliban judicial officials, the district governor, the police chief, intelligence officers, and local residents were present during the punishment. The Taliban said the flogging was carried out after the ruling was approved by their Supreme Court.
According to data compiled by Amu TV, Taliban have publicly flogged at least 51 people—including seven women—across various provinces in the past three weeks alone.
While some Afghans have condemned the practice as inhumane, public floggings continue despite repeated warnings and concerns from international human rights organizations.
