Heavy snowfall in Samangan Province in northern Afghanistan has blocked roads connecting four districts to the provincial capital, Aybak, creating significant challenges for residents.
Since Sunday, routes to Khuram wa Sarbagh, Roy Do Aab, Dara-i-Suf Bala, and Dara-i-Suf Payan districts have been inaccessible due to heavy snow, according to local sources. Residents report serious difficulties in accessing essential services as a result of the closures.
The Taliban’s Directorate of Public Works in Samangan confirmed that road access to four of the province’s seven districts has been disrupted over the past two days. The directorate stated that efforts to clear the roads are underway, with teams working to reopen the blocked routes.
Snowfall disruptions across provinces
The heavy snowfall has not been limited to Samangan. Other provinces have also faced similar disruptions, with key roads temporarily closed due to snow accumulation. While some of these routes were reopened by late Sunday, challenges persist in certain areas.
Meanwhile, the strategic Salang Pass, which had been closed for three days due to heavy snow, has now been reopened, allowing the resumption of traffic through the vital north-south corridor.
The situation highlights the recurring winter challenges faced by Afghanistan, where snowfall often isolates remote areas, leaving communities cut off from basic services and supplies.
