Afghanistan: Heavy snowfall shuts down key roads in Daikundi, Bamiyan

BAMIYAN, Afghanistan — Heavy snowfall and severe storms have forced the closure of several key roads in the central provinces of Daikundi and Bamiyan, local sources reported on Friday.

In Daikundi, the routes between Nili and Khadir, Nili and Ashtarlay, and Nili and Kiti have been closed to traffic due to snow and dangerous weather conditions. However, the roads connecting Nili to Qonagh and Nili to Pato remain open, according to the sources. Taliban officials said the closures are temporary and dependent on weather improvements.

In Bamiyan, Taliban authorities confirmed that multiple mountain passes, including Shato, Hajigak, Bakkak, Aqrabat, and Pul Bandeshoy, have also been shut down due to heavy snowfall, making travel impossible for the time being.

The disruptions are part of a broader wave of road closures across Afghanistan caused by winter storms. Major highways, including the Salang Pass and the Herat-Torghundi route, have been impassable since Thursday night, severely impacting travel and transportation.

Every winter, Afghanistan’s mountainous terrain and limited infrastructure leave many communities isolated, with blocked roads posing challenges for access to essential services and supplies.
