One dead, seven injured in Ghazni traffic accident

KABUL, Afghanistan — A traffic collision in Ghazni Province’s Gilan District on Monday left one person dead and seven others injured, including women and children, according to Taliban officials.

The incident occurred on the Kabul-Kandahar highway when a passenger vehicle collided with a cargo truck, the Taliban-run Bakhtar News Agency reported. Among the injured were six children and one woman, who were transported to a hospital in Ghazni for treatment.

A rising toll on Afghanistan’s roads

The Ghazni accident comes a day after a spate of deadly traffic incidents across the country. On Sunday, Dec. 29, three separate crashes in Baghlan, Faryab, and Laghman provinces claimed seven lives and injured 30 more.

Afghanistan has witnessed a significant increase in traffic accidents in recent weeks, particularly along its poorly maintained highways. Last week, more than 50 people were killed in a devastating crash on the Kabul-Kandahar highway, highlighting the dangerous conditions faced by travelers.

The Taliban-run traffic department has frequently cited driver negligence as a leading cause of these incidents. However, residents and activists point to Afghanistan’s deteriorating road infrastructure and lack of enforcement of traffic regulations as key contributors to the rising fatalities.
