KABUL, Afghanistan — The Kabul-Ghor highway has been closed to traffic due to heavy snowfall in the Band-e-Bakak area, the Taliban-run Ministry of Public Works announced on Monday.
Mohammad Ashraf Haqshinas, a Taliban spokesperson for the ministry, said in a statement that efforts are underway to clear the road and reopen it to traffic.
Meanwhile, snowfall has also begun in the Salang Pass, a vital corridor connecting northern and central Afghanistan.
The ministry reported that snow in southern Salang has reached a depth of seven centimeters.
Visibility in the Salang Pass is currently estimated at three kilometers, with wind speeds of two meters per second and temperatures ranging from -1.5 to -7 degrees Celsius.
The ministry added that snowfall is ongoing in several other provinces, but roads remain open to traffic for now.
The ministry has urged drivers and citizens to exercise caution when traveling on highways, advising them to use winter equipment and follow traffic rules and the guidance of highway authorities to ensure safety.
