BAMIYAN, Afghanistan — A gas leak at a coal mine in Bamiyan province claimed the lives of two workers on Saturday, Taliban governor’s spokesman said.

Abdul Saboor Sighani, Taliban governor’s spokesperson in Bamiyan, told reporters that the incident occurred at a coal mine in the village of Khwaja Ganj in the Saighan district.

The gas leak, which happened around noon, led to the suffocation of the workers while they were on duty inside the mine, Sighani said.

Coal mining incidents, often caused by poor safety measures and a lack of proper equipment, are common in Afghanistan, where laborers work under hazardous conditions with minimal oversight.
