Iran executed 13 Afghan nationals in October, rights group reports

TEHRAN — Iran executed at least 166 people in October, including 13 Afghan nationals, according to a report by the Iran Human Rights organization.

The rights group described the October executions as unprecedented in recent years, with executions reportedly carried out in cases related to “premeditated murder, drug-related offenses, and armed opposition to the ruling government.” Among those executed were six women and a German-Iranian dual citizen, the organization said.

The report noted that one of the executed prisoners had a history of mental illness and had previously been hospitalized in a psychiatric facility, though the individual’s identity was not disclosed.

According to the group, Iran has executed at least 651 people in the first 10 months of 2024, including several Afghan citizens.
