UNICEF: 6.1 million in Afghanistan now have access to essential health care

KABUL, Afghanistan — The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reports that 6.1 million people in Afghanistan now have access to essential health care services.

In a recent update posted on the social platform X, UNICEF stated that it supported and funded 2,400 health centers across various provinces in Afghanistan during September.

This expansion of care comes as health services in Afghanistan face severe challenges. The World Health Organization (WHO) has previously warned that restrictions imposed by the Taliban on female medical professionals and health workers have created significant obstacles to the delivery of health services.

The United Nations has also reported that international donors have reduced aid to Afghanistan this year, citing concerns over the Taliban’s policies, particularly its restrictions on women’s employment. The reduction in aid has led U.N. agencies and other humanitarian organizations to confront serious budget shortfalls, a situation that threatens to worsen the already dire humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.
