KABUL, Afghanistan — Taliban on Thursday announced the formation of a high-level committee to investigate the recent deaths of Afghan migrants near the Iran-Afghanistan border.
According to a Taliban statement, the committee will be led by Mohammad Ibrahim Sadr, the Taliban’s Deputy Minister for Security at the Ministry of Interior, and will include representatives from the Taliban-run ministries of defense, foreign affairs, and borders, as well as intelligence officials.
The incident has sparked significant reactions both domestically and internationally.
Iran’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Hassan Kazemi Qomi, denied reports that Iranian border guards had killed dozens of Afghan migrants attempting to cross the border.
The Iran-based human rights organization Haalvsh, which first reported on the incident with video footage, claimed that dozens were killed in the shooting. However, the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed.
The Taliban have stated that they will take further action once the details of the incident are clarified.
