KABUL, Afghanistan — The Taliban-controlled Ministry of Communications announced on Tuesday that it has registered 1.6 million SIM cards over the past month, as part of an ongoing effort to regulate mobile phone usage.
According to the Afghan Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (ATRA), there are currently 25 million SIM cards in use across Afghanistan.
Of these, 13.9 million have been registered in compliance with ATRA’s regulations, according to the ministry.
Some Afghan citizens have expressed frustration with the re-registration process, noting that even those who previously registered their SIM cards have been instructed to register them again under the new directives from the Taliban’s Ministry of Communications.
The move appears to be part of a broader initiative to tighten control over telecommunications in the country.
