EU says inclusive education crucial for Afghanistan’s future prosperity

KABUL, Afghanistan — The European Union’s delegation in Kabul emphasized the importance of inclusive education as a cornerstone for Afghanistan’s prosperity, announcing support for hundreds of schools across the country.

In a post on X, the EU delegation stated that education “for all” is essential to the well-being of Afghan society.

Veronica Boshkovich-Pohar, the EU chargé d’affaires, reinforced this message during a visit to an elementary school in Kabul, where she affirmed the EU’s “unwavering” commitment to supporting education in Afghanistan.

The EU’s stance comes as the Taliban continue to enforce a ban on education for girls, which has been in place since the group returned to power in August 2021. This ban includes barring girls from attending high schools and universities, a policy that has drawn widespread criticism both domestically and internationally.

Female students across Afghanistan have spoken out against the restrictions, insisting that access to education is their human, Islamic, and legal right. Despite mounting pressure, the Taliban have not reversed their stance on girls’ education.

In a recent gathering known as the “Justice Jirga,” attended by reportedly over a million people, the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement called on the Taliban to lift educational bans and allow Afghan girls to return to school. The movement joined a chorus of voices urging the Taliban to recognize and uphold the rights of women and girls across the country.
