KABUL, Afghanistan — Three children under the age of five have died from diarrhea in Afghanistan over the past week, according to a weekly report from the World Health Organization.

The report also noted that a total of 3,228 cases were recorded across 179 districts, with the fatalities occurring in the provinces of Badakhshan and Paktika.

WHO data indicates that the highest incidence rates were observed in the provinces of Paktia, Nimroz, Logar, and Kabul. Paktia reported 1,166 cases per 10,000 people, followed by Nimroz with 1,095 cases, Logar with 918 cases, and Kabul with 722 cases.

Since the beginning of 2024, Afghanistan has reported 146,555 cases of diarrhea across 346 districts, resulting in 70 deaths. Among those affected, 81,069 were children under the age of five, while 72,621 cases involved women and girls, according to WHO statistics.

The organization noted an 11.7 percent decrease in new cases over the past week compared to previous weeks, but the persistent high incidence highlights ongoing public health challenges in the country.
