Akhundzada orders only spokespeople to speak for Taliban

In a new directive, Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada has ordered that only their spokespersons are authorized to speak or publish statements on behalf of the Taliban.

The decree also instructs spokespersons to refrain from commenting on issues where the Taliban’s position or policy is unclear.

Additionally, they are required to seek approval from the leadership of their respective ministries or agencies before making any public statements.

This move comes as the Taliban has already imposed unprecedented restrictions on media access to information.

Both domestic and international organizations advocating for press freedom have accused the Taliban of enforcing strict censorship since their return to power, alleging that the group does not allow the publication of content that contradicts its interests.

Taliban has also significantly restricted the work of female journalists in Kabul and has banned them from reporting in many provinces.

Taliban officials, including their spokespersons, have repeatedly stated that media outlets must consider national interests and religious values when publishing content.

However, critics argue that the Taliban equates its own interests with national interests and religious values, thereby preventing the media from publishing anything that challenges its narrative.
