Taliban claims $10 billion in Afghanistan’s trade over past year

The Taliban-run Ministry of Industry and Commerce announced at a press briefing in Kabul that Afghanistan conducted approximately $10 billion in trade over the past year.

According to the ministry’s report, Afghanistan’s exports amounted to $1.8 billion, while imports totalled $8 billion.

However, many Afghan citizens have criticized the imbalance, pointing out that excessive imports compared to exports exacerbate poverty and limit job creation in the country.

These citizens noted that since the Taliban seized power in August 2021, numerous small businesses have ceased operations for various reasons, leaving many struggling to find employment.

Industry workers in Afghanistan also expressed concerns about the challenges they face, including banking restrictions imposed since the Taliban’s takeover and increased taxes and tariffs. These factors have significantly hindered their business operations.
