Women’s movement criticizes Iran’s ‘support’ for Taliban, links it to Afghan migration

The Women’s Movement “Window of Hope” has criticized Iran’s anti-immigrant policies, stating that support for the Taliban is directly linked to the flight and migration of Afghans.

In a statement, the movement urged the Iranian government to cease its support for the Taliban. “Iran, contrary to human rights principles, engages in the harassment and torture of Afghan migrants,” the statement said.

“It is a double standard for Iran to support the Taliban, who are responsible for the devastation of Afghanistan, while simultaneously violating human rights by harassing, torturing, detaining, and forcibly deporting Afghan migrants,” the movement asserted.

The statement highlighted that Afghan migrants in Iran include former government employees, human rights activists, ethnic and religious minorities, former military personnel, and other at-risk groups. “Subjecting such individuals to torture and death is against all accepted international principles that the Iranian government must adhere to,” the movement stated.

The movement also pointed out that terrorism, fueled by the interference and policies of neighboring countries and world powers, is a primary driver of Afghan migration.

Additionally, the statement noted that poverty and unemployment force many Afghans to leave their country in search of basic sustenance. The Women’s Movement “Window of Hope” emphasized that supporting Afghan migrants is an international responsibility and called on Iran to end its anti-immigrant policies and stop supporting the Taliban.
