Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s foreign minister, praised Hamas’s conflict against Israel during a phone call with Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas’s political bureau.
Zia Ahmad Takal, a Taliban spokesman, released a statement saying that Muttaqi emphasized the Taliban’s support for Hamas’s “jihad” and the Palestinian people.
In the phone conversation, Muttaqi stated that “unity, steadfastness, and adherence to Islamic values” are fundamental principles in their jihadist struggle.
Hamas is often described as an “Iran-backed militant group.” Notably, there have been reports of Iran’s support for the Taliban during their two-decade-long conflict against the former government in Afghanistan.
Since the onset of the latest conflict between Hamas and Israel, nearly 39,000 people have been killed in Gaza, tens of thousands have been injured, and hundreds of thousands have been displaced from their homes.
