Bin Laden’s ‘close aide’ arrested in Pakistan

Amin al-Haq, a close aide of Al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden, has been arrested in Pakistan, according to reports from Pakistani media. The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of Punjab confirmed the arrest on Friday.

Usman Akram Gondal, Deputy Inspector General of the CTD, stated that al-Haq was apprehended during an intelligence-based operation in Sarai Alamgir, a town in the Gujrat district. “The terrorist was taken into custody following a meticulously planned operation,” Gondal said, as reported by Geo News.

Al-Haq, who has been associated with bin Laden since 1996, is considered one of the top fighters within the extremist group and has been involved in several terrorist activities. He was responsible for coordinating security for the deceased Al-Qaeda chief and has been designated as a terrorist by the United Nations.

A case has been registered against al-Haq, and authorities are investigating his presence in Pakistan. “He was seen in Afghanistan in 2021 and possesses a Pakistani ID card with addresses in Lahore and Haripur,” Gondal added.

The United Nations Security Council’s website lists al-Haq, born in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province in 1960, as a designated terrorist since January 25, 2001.

In 2011, U.S. troops conducted a raid on bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, resulting in the death of the global terrorist, who orchestrated the 9/11 attacks.
