Taliban sets price of bread in Herat at 8 Afghanis

Herat, Afghanistan — The Taliban-controlled municipality in Herat has set the price of a loaf of bread at 8 Afghanis ($0.10). According to the new price list, each loaf must weigh 260 grams.

Previously, a loaf of bread in Herat was sold for 10 Afghanis ($0.13). The municipality has warned that bakeries not adhering to this price will face “legal action.” The new regulation also mandates that bakeries use electronic scales.

Citizens have criticized this measure, pointing to the widespread poverty that leaves many unable to afford even a single meal for their families. Meanwhile, some bakers in Herat express concerns that the new price regulation, which disregards their operational costs, will pose significant challenges to their businesses.

The price adjustment comes at a time when Afghanistan’s economic conditions continue to deteriorate, with many struggling to meet their basic needs.
