The Taliban on Monday confirmed an attack on their Department for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (PVPV) in the northern city of Maimana, the center of Faryab province.
Saif-ul-Islam Khyber, a Taliban spokesperson for the ministry, said an assailant attempted to enter the compound but was “neutralised” before reaching his target.
He did not elaborate on the type of weapon used or whether the attacker was detained or killed.
Local sources in Faryab told Amu that an explosion occurred at the entrance gate of the department on Sunday evening. They said the blast took place only a few metres from the Taliban-run First Security District headquarters in the province.
According to the sources, the explosion appeared to have been caused by a hand grenade thrown from inside the compound and resulted in no casualties.
Taliban have not provided further details about the nature of the attack.
