At least two Taliban members were killed in a clash with Pakistani border forces at the Torkham crossing in eastern Afghanistan on Sunday evening, sources from Nangarhar said on Monday.
The clash on Sunday evening continued for at least two hours, sources said but did not provide details on whether there had been casualties on the Pakistan side.
Just hours before the clash broke out, the Taliban closed the Torkham crossing to traffic and said the reason behind the decision was that Pakistan had not fulfilled its commitments.
Another source from Nangarhar said that two more clashes happened between Pakistani forces and the Taliban near the Torkham crossing on Monday morning. The reason behind the clashes is not known yet.
Quoted by AP, Pakistani officials said on Sunday that the Taliban shut Torkham over Pakistan’s alleged refusal to allow Afghan patients and their caretakers to enter Pakistan for medical care without travel documents.
Clashes between Taliban and Pakistani forces have broken out on a number of occasions in the past few months along the border and both sides have periodically closed the border.
Since the Taliban takeover in August 2021, the Pakistani government has allowed ill or injured Afghans to enter Pakistan for medical treatment and a limited number of caretakers.
